Whatever Works of the Day: When it comes to traffic violations, the city of Caracas is clearly at the end of its invisible rope.
The district of Sucre in the eastern part of the Venezuelan capital has unleashed a horde of mimes onto its streets in hopes that their silent judgement will persuade bad drivers to curb their recklessness.
A troupe of about 120 mummers will utilize such tactics as finger-wagging and face-making in their pursuit of safer roads.
“Many times, the mimes can achieve what traffic police cannot achieve using warning and sanctions in their efforts to maintain control,” said Alex Ojeda, president of cultural organization which trained the mimes. “Mimes, on the contrary, often achieve the same objective by employing artistic and peaceful actions.”
